Children See, Children Do

One of the most challenging things about being a parent (I assume) is that those little eyes are always watching you, taking cues about life and forming their opinions about just about everything based on your own.  They form their ideas about what is really important in life according to what they see their parents deeming as important.  For example, if it's a value of Dad's to work hard until a project is completed, then junior will likely hold a similar value.  If it's a value for mom to care for the needy, then junior will likely catch that same heart somewhere down the line.

Kids definitely take many cues from parents.  Some are given intentionally, others are caught from the way we TRULY approach life.  For example, if I say to Johnny, "Johnny, having things in life really isn't that important," but in actuality I am continually buying new things and obviously taking pride in them, what will Johnny believe?  Will he hear my words, or learn from my actions?

I would be very curious to hear from some parents out there about how they see their own values (good or not-so-good) played out in their children.  Through this discussion, I hope to learn about how to one day be a strong parent myself, but also offer support and encouragement to parents who are discouraged.

It's very interesting to note the patterns of behaviour of kids these days.  There are patterns that I see emerging that I find quite disturbing.  Many idols play their role in the formation of our kids these days: consumerism, passiveness, and media all have been given prominent roles in raising our children.  This fact, in itself, is really quite disturbing to me.

That's why I set up this site.  I want to explore emerging behaviour trends in today's teens, and in the process, wonder aloud if there isn't some positive way to counteract or take a positive stance against these trends.  Unfortunately, it doesn't take long to realize that parents, sometimes actively, more often than not passively, have contributed (or not contributed) much to the ensuing deluge by virtue of their own lifestyles and desires.

This site is here not to criticize anyone, but to reflect upon and solemnly acknowledge human brokenness in our  21st century Western world, and to hopefully provide some glimpses of hope for those who need it.

I will leave you to make no assumptions.  I am a follower of Jesus Christ, and this will profoundly affect my outlook.  I hope and pray that this outlook will genuinely and accurately acknowledge the love, humility, and proactiveness of my Saviour.

Enjoy!

Matt
